Italy and Spain Deploy Naval Ships to Safeguard Gaza Aid Flotilla After Drone Strikes
Mediterranean Sea
In a joint response to rising tensions at sea, Italy and Spain have dispatched naval vessels to provide protection for the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), a humanitarian mission delivering aid to Gaza, after the convoy was targeted by drone attacks in international waters.
Italy was the first to respond, sending a frigate earlier this week after several drones reportedly launched flashbang-style explosives at the flotilla. On Thursday, Rome confirmed it was deploying a second warship to strengthen the security escort. Spain, echoing Italy’s commitment, announced it would also send a naval ship, set to depart from Cartagena within 24 hours.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, speaking from New York during the United Nations General Assembly, strongly condemned the attacks and underscored the legal rights of the flotilla’s multinational participants.
“The Spanish government insists that international law must be respected,” Sánchez told reporters. “Forty-five nations are represented in this humanitarian effort, and their citizens must be able to navigate safely through international waters. Our navy stands ready to intervene if necessary, including conducting a rescue mission.”
Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto briefed lawmakers in Rome, stating, “We’ve already sent one ship, and a second is en route. We are fully prepared for any eventuality.”
The GSF, comprised of several vessels carrying humanitarian supplies for the besieged Gaza Strip, came under drone surveillance and assault on Wednesday night. Organizers claim low-flying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) dropped non-lethal but potentially dangerous devices designed to intimidate and disrupt.
Flotilla activists described the attacks as “a dangerous escalation,” raising serious concerns about freedom of navigation and the safety of civilians onboard. While no casualties have been reported so far, several boats reportedly sustained minor damage.
Video footage and eyewitness accounts from activists aboard the flotilla captured the tense moments as drones circled above and explosions echoed across the water.
The mission, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, includes participants from across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Its goal is to deliver urgent supplies to Gaza amidst growing international condemnation of the humanitarian crisis in the enclave.
This latest development has intensified scrutiny on Israeli defense operations in the Mediterranean, though Tel Aviv has yet to comment on the reported drone activity.
As tensions rise, Italy and Spain’s unprecedented naval response marks a rare European intervention to protect a humanitarian convoy at sea.
