In a defiant play for dominance in the world’s largest smartphone market, Xiaomi has officially launched its new Xiaomi 17 series, going head-to-head with Apple in the premium smartphone race — and it’s not pulling any punches.

Unveiled during a high-energy product event in Beijing on Thursday night, Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun declared it was “time for everyone to get reacquainted with Xiaomi phones,” claiming the Xiaomi 17 lineup had “surpassed the iPhone 17 series in many areas.” His bold remarks came just weeks after Apple set new records for iPhone pre-orders in China, defying sluggish consumer sentiment and fierce local competition.

A Direct Challenge to Apple

Industry analysts are calling this Xiaomi’s most aggressive challenge to Apple yet.

“The Xiaomi 17 Pro series is clearly a statement — not just of capability, but of intent,” said Chiew Le Xuan, analyst at Canalys. “This isn’t about being an alternative anymore — Xiaomi wants to be seen as Apple’s equal in the premium segment.”

According to research firm IDC, Xiaomi overtook Apple to become the fourth-largest smartphone vendor in China in Q2 2025, as the Cupertino giant slipped to fifth. The Xiaomi 17 series aims to solidify that lead.

Lei Jun wasn’t shy about the comparisons — showcasing both devices side by side during the launch, highlighting battery life, display brightness, design, and pricing advantages.

“Apple users are welcome to buy Xiaomi phones,” Lei quipped, drawing laughter from a packed audience in Beijing.

More Than Specs: A Shift in Strategy

This isn’t just about hardware. Xiaomi is also undergoing a branding shift — aiming to elevate itself from a value-for-money brand to a true premium tech contender.

In a strategic leap, Xiaomi skipped the “16” series altogether, jumping from the Xiaomi 15 (launched last October) straight to the 17 series. According to Lu Weibing, head of Xiaomi’s smartphone division, the new naming isn’t a marketing gimmick but reflects the scale of innovation and upgrades packed into the devices.

Analysts agree. Ivan Lam of Counterpoint Research said the Xiaomi 17 series reinforces a trend of premiumization, driven by “significant upgrades across core specifications with modest price increases.”

The Battle for China’s High-End Market

Apple still dominates the global high-end smartphone segment, controlling over 60% of the premium market, according to Canalys. But in China, its grip is loosening as local players like Xiaomi and Huawei push into the 4,000–6,000 yuan range — once Apple’s uncontested territory.

The Xiaomi 17 lineup is part of a broader strategy to capture users frustrated by rising iPhone prices and those looking for high-end features without the Apple tax.

Real Power Under the Hood

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, built on cutting-edge 3nm architecture — the same tech used for Apple’s A19 Pro — outperforms Apple’s chip in multi-core benchmarks and matches it in single-core tests, according to Geekbench 6 data.

Add in larger batteries, a brighter screen, and the unique rear display on the Pro and Pro Max models — and Xiaomi is delivering premium specs Apple simply doesn’t offer (yet).

The Road Ahead: Can Xiaomi Go Premium for Real?

Despite the hype, experts say Xiaomi still faces a long road in building a premium brand image.

“Shifting from budget champion to luxury competitor isn’t just about specs,” noted Amber Liu, Canalys analyst. “It takes long-term branding, consistency, and consumer trust — something Apple has built over two decades.”

Still, Xiaomi’s momentum is real — and growing. With its new flagship devices already drawing strong early demand, the brand is closer than ever to claiming a larger slice of the premium pie.
